On Set with Jackson Dunn Filming "Opposite" Official Music Video & Writing During Lockdown

Updated: Feb 5, 2023

A fiery, intense burning is on display whenever Jackson takes the stage - his presence on stage quite simply explodes with undiluted passion. His music bleeds with feeling and voice his emotional points in the listener - his writing comes from personal experience.”

There is no better way of explaining the force that is Jackson Dunn - Gold Coast Musician of the Year Finalist for 2020. Never content with delivering the expected, with each single and music video release Jackson bares his heart, soul and imagination to connect with fans.

Opposite to the lightning-speed strumming and beer bottle slide guitar tracks and performances, fans are familiar with from Jackson; during Covid19 lockdowns, he found himself with time on the keys.

“I wrote the main riff for the song on piano, it had to be a song played on piano. I thought about recording some guitar during the recording session but felt it was the one song I’ve always wanted to write and experiment on not using a guitar,” says Jackson.

There's nothing quite like working with Jackson and it was loads of fun to be back at it and working on set for the filming of the official “Opposite” music video. A song that was written in the thick of lockdown about spending a lot of time with someone in close proximity and learning about them at a faster and heightened rate than usual. Jackson says, “2020 was an eye-opener for all of us and iso definitely made us all look at things with a magnifying glass.”

Those familiar with Jacksons’ previous music video releases know when he has a message that needs to be shared and heard, he’ll push boundaries to visually represent the intensity of the lyrics as seen with Light the Way and This Far.

With the release of “Opposite” being a more pensive ballad, the brief called for there to be one single focus so that the message could be heard.

“I just wanted to do the song justice and get it out there,” says Jackson.

Jackson presenting me with the style muse of Lenny Kravitz, a vibe he already possesses with that similar rule-breaking style & renegade swagger of Lenny. The style foundations for the music video were to be kept simple and raw, going shirtless with the addition of accessories in moody tones and patterns that hint at the wild and gritty emotion heard within Opposites poignant lyrics.

The Behind the Scenes:

Whilst the official music video filmed at the iconic nightlife spot and restaurant The Avenue on Orchid Ave allowed for their small intimate crew to execute filming in four hours, they also delivered on producing some typical classic Jackson Dunn cheek in a behind the scenes reel featuring a brash but cool director, a rocker lightening guy and dim-witted janitor.

When it came to the cheeky behind the scenes reel, we literally played dress ups and channelled every crazy stereotype for a Hollywood director, production crew and janitor we could think of to craft three different personas all very obviously played by Jackson Dunn himself. I knew preparing for the day that I’d be delving into my vintage collection for a few unique pieces to deliver on Jackson’s antics. Truth be told I even raided my pantry and fruit bowl for Director Dunn and the Dim-Witted Janitor with his banana.
